BMW and Volvo are known as luxury brands. As such, they’re engineered to deliver a stellar performance. So, it only makes sense that you’d want to peek under their respective hoods. Both the BMW X5 and the Volvo XC90 boast impressive gas mileage. When it comes to raw power, however, the X5 easily pulls ahead.
The 3.0L BMW TwinPower Turbo inline 6-cylinder engine of the X5 provides 375 horsepower and 398 lb-ft of torque . In comparison, the XC90’s standard Direct Injected Turbocharged engine falls short with only 247 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque.
The X5 offers even more power at higher trim levels with a 4.4L BMW M TwinPower Turbo V8 engine on the M60i and the M models. This powerful engine provides the M60i with 523 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque while the M Competition model generates 617 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque.
Even with supercharged engines on its higher trim levels, the XC90 tops out at 455 horsepower and 523 lb-ft of torque, much less than the capabilities of either of the X5’s higher trims.
Having access to great power is one thing. Being able to employ that power to accomplish great feats is quite another. Fortunately, these two powerhouses have come to play!
The X5 and the XC90 both have ample towing capacities when you need to bring along something extra. Whether you need to hook up a trailer, a couple jet skis, or even a camper when you really want to get away, these vehicles can help.
When properly equipped, the XC90 has up to 5,000 pounds of towing capacity, which will handle a good amount of your gear. However, the X5 goes the extra mile with up to 7,200 pounds of towing capacity when properly equipped with the available factory-installed trailer hitch. So, you’ll be fully equipped to explore without limits.
Both models are prepared to tow and provide features to assist in giving you peace of mind while doing so. For example, the X5 and the XC90 each come equipped with Hill Descent Control. Still, the BMW goes a few steps further to ensure you can get whatever you’re hauling safely from Point A to Point B.
Among its additional standard features are:
- Dynamic Stability Control
- Dynamic Traction Control
- Dynamic Brake Control
Unfortunately, none of these features comes standard on the XC90.
Of course, power is only one aspect of a vehicle’s value. For example, you’ll be spending your time inside the cabin, not perched on the engine block. So, what kind of accommodations and amenities do the X5 and the XC90 provide to you and yours?
The BMW X5 and the Volvo XC90 each provide seating for up to seven people and feature spacious interiors to maximize comfort for you and your passengers. Both SUVs also provide ample cargo space for your belongings when you want to hit the town or get away for a weekend.
Still, the amount of room everyone on board varies a bit between these two models. This is especially apparent when comparing the headroom and shoulder room inside each model, as shown in the chart below.
Model |
BMW X5
|
Volvo XC90
|
|---|---|---|
| Headroom (Front/Rear) | 40.8/40.8 inches | 38.9/38.5 inches |
| Shoulder Room (Front/Rear) | 60/58.1 inches | 57.7/56.6 inches |
So, no matter how tall or where you’re seated in the BMW X5, you’ll enjoy more personal space than in the Volvo.
Both the X5 and the XC90 come with a suite of standard infotainment features to keep you connected on the go, like:
- Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ capabilities
- Bluetooth® connectivity
- Navigation
- 10-speaker audio systems
The XC90 comes with a 9-inch touchscreen display to help you control these features, while the X5 comes with a larger and easily navigable 14.9-inch touchscreen . Both models also feature voice control, but only the X5 comes with the advanced BMW Live Cockpit Professional . This feature learns and remembers your preferences the more you use it.
Both the BMW X5 and the Volvo XC90 have plenty of features to offer. When it comes to pure power and extra convenience, however, the X5 has the upper hand.
